What is choline?

Choline(β-hydroxyethyl trimethyl ammonium hydroxide) is commonly classified as a water soluble essential nutrient and usually grouped within the Vitamin B complex.  Also it plays a pivotal role in the metabolism of growing livestock.

Unlike the other B-vitamins, choline plays a significant role in nutrition as a structural component of many tissues, a lipotropic agent, and a source of biologically labile methyl groups. Furthermore, it prevents animals getting from several diseases such as fatty liver syndrome or perosis and so on.

On the other hand, choline is not always adequately available in the diet, or from natural synthesis.  All in all, choline is a kind of essential feed additives, necessary in various aspects such as nutrient, metabolism, and disease prevention.

Nutritional importance of choline

A. Choline has essential metabolic functions :
As a constituent of phospholipids, improving fat transport and cell construction
• As a precursor in the synthesis of acetylcholine as a neurotransmitter
• As a source of biological labile methyl groups, essential for numerous biological processes
• As a promoter of the fat metabolism in the liver

B. Choline deficiency results in :
  • Reducing growth rate
• Poor utilization of nutrients and health
• Poor hatchability and fertility
• Inducing metabolic disease on liver and kidney
• ‘Spraddle hindlegs’ in piglet
• ‘Perosis’ in poultry
